Course Information
Description The lab provides a hands-on learning experience for exploration of human system components and basic physiology. Systems to be studied include endocrine, cardiovascular, immune,
lymphatic, respiratory, digestive (including nutrition), urinary (including fluid and electrolyte balance), and reproductive (including human development and genetics).
Prerequisites Basic skills competency in reading and writing.
Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will:
Apply appropriate safety and ethical standards.
Locate and identify anatomical structures.
Appropriately utilize laboratory equipment, such as microscopes, dissection tools, general lab ware,
physiology data acquisition systems, and virtual simulations.
Work collaboratively to perform experiments.
Demonstrate the steps involved in the scientific method.
Communicate results of scientific investigations, analyze data and formulate conclusions.
Use critical thinking and scientific problem-solving skills, including, but not limited to, inferring, integrating,
synthesizing, and summarizing, to make decisions, recommendations, and predictions.
Core Objectives Communication skills:    Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication.

Critical Thinking Skills:    Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions.

Empirical and Quantitative Skills:    Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Teamwork:    Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view.

Social Responsibility:    Students will demonstrate intercultural competency and civic knowledge by engaging effectively in local, regional, national and/or global communities.

Personal Responsibility:    Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.

Determination of
Final Grade
There will be four (4) main lab practicals during the semester and a pop test possible during every lab. I will drop your lowest lab pop test, and no lab practicals will be dropped. The average of your pop tests are worth one lab practical. Your final lab grade will be the average of your four lab practicals & the average of your three highest pop tests. Formula = P1 + P2 + P3 + P4 + (avg. of pop tests) divided by 5. If a student has perfect attendance (or near perfect), two points will be added to the final lab grade. A comprehensive lab final will be given to students who missed a lab practical. If a student misses two practicals, they receive a zero for one practical and can replace the other zero with the comprehensive final. No make-up practical exams or pop tests are allowed for the week without a legitimate doctor's signed excuse.
Course Policies
Instructor Policies I will not discuss grades over the phone. You may request your grades by e-mail from your Lamar State College-Port Arthur e-mail account (for example, doeja@lamarpa.edu) or by student-instructor conference.
Attendance Policy Absences, Tardiness, and Make-ups: Attendance is required, and punctuality is expected. You are responsible for all materials covered in class. If you quit coming to class and do not officially drop, your grades will be averaged, and you will receive the grade represented by this average. The administrative details are your responsibility (You must officially drop the course). You can only miss one practical exam with an excused absence (excluding the final), and you must take the final exam (practical #4). If you miss a practical exam, you will take a comprehensive lab final to substitute for the missed practical exam. Excused absences include medical and family emergencies and are determined at the instructor's discretion. Poor preparation or conflict with other scheduled exams is not a valid excuse for missing an exam.
Academic Honesty Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies
  1. No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.

  2. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission.

  3. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
